In a deeply distressing incident,a police constable’s lifeless body was discovered hanging from a flat window on the fourth floor in the Bodyguard Lines area. The deceased has been identified as Sukhlal Murmu, a member of the Kolkata Police force and a native of Pedda Haripur village in the Manbazar police station area of Purulia district, West Bengal.
Sukhlal Murmu had recently been transferred from the 4th Battalion to the 3rd Battalion of Kolkata Police. He had been missing since May 26, prompting his family and colleagues to lodge a missing person’s report. On Wednesday night, residents spotted a body dangling through a flat’s window and immediately alerted the Watgunge Police Station.
Responding swiftly, police arrived at the scene, secured the area, and retrieved the decomposing body. A strong stench had already spread due to the heat and delayed discovery. The entire recovery process was video recorded as per procedure, and the body was sent for postmortem examination to determine the exact time and cause of death.
From Sukhlal’s bag, officers found a suicide note that offered a heartbreaking glimpse into his state of mind. He cited severe pain from a serious injury to his left hand, which led to both physical immobility and prolonged mental stress. He confessed to feeling defeated by depression and expressed an emotional exhaustion with life itself.
His death has sent shockwaves through the police force.Senior officials of the Kolkata Police have launched an investigation. The suicide note has been sent for forensic testing, and the postmortem results are awaited. This tragic episode has once again pushed the issue of mental health within the police force into the spotlight, urging immediate reforms and support systems for frontline personnel.
